How to Turn Off | Fast Startup | Windows 10

Windows 10 came with many features for a fast and optimized experience and performance enhancements, one of them is the fast Startup feature. It's a feature to boot windows 10 fast.

It's kind of hibernating your PC, windows 10 will save kernel image and drivers in files known as hiberfile. this is the reason why even after the screen goes black the drive loads. When windows 10 boots next time it loads the file again making booting process faster than the regular boot.
This feature is enabled by default in clean installs of windows 10.

But this feature causes drive mounting problems in other operating systems like based on Linux i.e Ubuntu, Linux Mint etc giving errors like
Unable to access "xyz volume"

This error usually shows when power is cut abruptly or when the windows is not allowed to shut down properly.

To solve this you have to disable fast startup in windows 10. To do so...

  • search for "Power options" in the Start Menu & open it.
  • Click "Choose what the power button does" on the left side of the window.
  • Click "Change settings that are currently unavailable."
  • Under "Shutdown settings" make sure "Turn on fast startup" is disabled.
This method causes you to disable fast startup but you can avoid this by letting
windows to shutdown completely, wait until any whizzing sound and light go off.
