Firefox last update for Windows XP & Vista in 2017 | What to do next?

If you use Mozilla firefox as your Browser then you should read this, Mozilla Firefox is dropping support for windows vista and windows XP in this coming year 2017.

Mozilla announced that windows vista and XP will be supported until September 2017 in-between the period users will be shifted to Extended Support Release (ESR).

Many internet browsers have already dropped the support for windows XP and windows vista.

Mozilla stated that it will support and release security updates until September 2017, wherein March 2017 Firefox users on Windows XP and Vista platforms will be shifted to Extended Support Release Programme, which is a less frequently updated version of Mozilla Firefox Web browser, meaning users will receive the latest version until March.

Then after Mozilla will look at the numbers of users on the defunct OS and will give a final date to end the Firefox Support and Mozilla Firefox update.

I use Mozilla Firefox, what should I do?

Nearly 10 % of all PC’s use Windows XP and windows Vista as their operating system, 23 % use windows 10 and a wide 47 % use windows 7 according to Wikipedia.

"In the meantime, we strongly encourage our users to upgrade to a version of Windows that is supported by Microsoft. Unsupported operating systems receive no security updates, have known exploits, and are dangerous for you to use. For planning purposes, enterprises using Firefox should consider September 2017 as the support end date for Windows XP and Vista," Mozilla said.

You can use it safely up to September 2017 then after you can try some alternate browsers(...no chrome and IE won’t work) or the best you should upgrade the os to the latest and supported version.

Try something New

If you are worried about the license fee then you can use some free Linux distros many of them can run on very old hardware and believe me your machine will work like a new one. You can use for example:
  • Linux Mint Mate
  • Elementary OS
  • Ubuntu
  • Puppy Linux
and much more, the best thing about them is that you can test them using Live Disks before using and all are free.
So summing it all, you can do this

  • Browser - switch to alternate browser
  • Upgrade - to latest windows
  • Linux - Install a Linux OS
